A checkout of the x-hall project

For all the Danish skaters out there, here are some news that I'll bet you've all been waiting for.

I went to meet Tom Ahlqvist and Anna Calledda today to catch up with the progress of the Copenhagen skatepark project called X-hall. To my surprise, they're are really far in the process of building the park, and should be done just after new years eve – so the in the beginning of 2004. From what I could see at my visit – it is very likely that they'll reach this goal.

The project is the sickest bowl paradise I've seen to date! It is 3 bowls – the two deepest with four 90 degrees corners. The deepest bowl is 8 foot deep, the middle bowl is 6 foot deep, and the last bowl is 4 foot deep. Between the deepest to the middle bowl is an approx. 1 meter platform.

The deepest bowl reaches vert at its top at the current state. When the ramp is done, there will be build an oververt in one of the corners (not at the spine) and different escelators with vert in them.

The middle bowl, which is 6 foot deep, will be as it is on the pictures: The transition doesn't reach vert and it has got only 90 degrees corners. There will be a spine from the 6 foot bowl to the 4 foot bowl without a platform (a real spine)

The 4 foot bowl has a little more exciting construction than only 90 degrees corners. On one side it is completely straight and has a long escalator. The other side also has an escalator, but a much steeper one. Right after this steep escalator, the ramp turns 20 degrees into a hip which leads right into the next corner. If you're having troubles following me, then check out the pictures.

On top of the bowl, there will also be a dirtjump for the BMX riders as well as an obstacle course for mountainbikers. The BMXers will catch speed on the dirt downhill at the entrance of the park, and have their dirtjump in dry weather inside the building.

If you sign up as a member of the park, you'll get your own locker as well as free skating for 500 kr. a year. If you're not a member, you can buy a day pass for 10 kr. The skatepark will not carry any money in the club-house, so in order to buy your ticket, you'll have to go to the local swimming-club and get it there. I guess this will keep robbers from ruining this great park.

The park is under the "Bispebuen". The structure was first build as a highway entrance to the E20 highway in case that they were going to build a ring-road around Copenhagen. This never happened, so in the meantime grafitti artirsts used it as a playground. This is why it got its name: x-hall of fame – because it was the hall of fame for grafitti artists. Now, Anna Calledda and Tom Ahlqvist finally found a use for it: to build a bowl paradise of your wildest dreams.

If you want to get to the park, get off at the "Fuglebakken station" and ask some people for the "Bispebuen" Рit is right next to the station. If you're going there from downtown, then drive down "H.C. Andersens boulevard" and turn right just before it turns into a highway bridge. When you get to the road, turn left down Borups All̩. When you reach the end of the highway bridge, you're there. Go down the gravel road, and you'll get to the skatepark. Enjoy!

It's sweet. The only possible problem I see (except for the temperature this time of year), is the lack of transition between the bowls.

Of course two of them are connected with a spine, but people tend to make "lines" for each of them, thus making it rather tricky to get to make use of the "twin bowls".
